Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

January 20, 2022

Make your own Hot Chocolate Mix in minutes with this easy to follow recipe! It’s perfect to have on hand for after sledding and playing in the snow, camping, or for sipping around an outdoor fire.

Since I started homeschooling this year, my boys spend a lot more time outside than they ever have before. I’m talking hours! It’s such a fun treat for them when I surprise them outside with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. 🙂 I’m sure you can also imagine the amount of hot chocolate mix I go through between 3 growing boys. It’s a lot! And that’s why I decided to start making it in bulk.

Couldn’t I just go to the store and buy a huge can of Carnation Mix? Yes, but I promise this is so much tastier. Plus, I appreciate knowing exactly what is going in my drinks. Especially if it’s for my boys. Have you ever looked to see what’s in hot chocolate mixes? The length of the ingredient list is endless, which started this recipe for homemade hot chocolate mix.

You can also use my hot chocolate mix in my Frozen Hot Chocolate!

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • White chocolate chips add a creaminess to the hot chocolate.
  • You can use this mix with milk (any kind you like!) or water. It will be creamiest with milk.
  • 1/3 cup mix and 2/3 cup liquid will give you a perfect cup of hot chocolate! For an extra, deeper flavor and creamy hot chocolate, use equal parts mix and liquid.
  • Homemade hot chocolate mix has a tendency to clump when mixed with liquid. To avoid clumping and getting a smooth hot chocolate is to first make a smooth slurry before adding all of the liquid.

Keep it on hand all season long so you can whip up a cup of creamy hot chocolate whenever that craving strikes.

Yield: 20 servings

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups dry whole milk powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups cocoa powder, dutch-process or natural unsweetened
  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 corn starch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add all the ingredients to your food processor and pulse until the chocolate is finely ground.
  2. To make a single serving of hot chocolate, place 1/3 cup mix into a cup. Heat 2/3 cup milk or water. Add just enough liquid to the cup to cover the mix and whisk until smooth. Whisk in remaining liquid.
  3. Top with marshmallows and whipped cream and enjoy!
  4. Store remaining mix in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
